Balance presents Jozif

After 22 volumes of its much-lauded double-disc compilation series, Australian imprint Balance returns to launch its new ‘presents’ series, throwing the spotlight on the emerging talents that are shaping the future of the scene.

One of the most exciting names to proliferate in the world of house music and thereabouts over the last five years or so, English DJ and producer jozif is a unique talent. Born to a professional drummer father and a Royal Ballet ballerina mother, he grew up surrounded by music and slowly but surely worked his way into similarly focused endeavours. His highly musical take on house and downtempo 4/4 grooves as a producer is somewhat belied by his prowess as a dancefloor-driven DJ, but it’s exactly this combination that makes him such an exciting proposition. Whether he’s playing the big rooms of a We Love… Space residency, serving up wigged-out grooves alongside his Fist Or Finger label partner Craig Richards or soundtracking a sun-drenched day party in Shoreditch, he always seems effortlessly comfortable – and accomplished.

“I think I’m one of those people that is always trying to make sure that dancefloor is having a good time without being too dictated by it” he says of his DJing mentality. “Initially for my Balance mix, I really wanted to do a clubby mix. A lot of people will know me only from my productions which I don’t really tend to play in the clubs as I tend to play a lot more ‘up’, so I wanted to do something that represented what I do on the weekends. I did the first version and we started to get the records cleared, but in the mean time a good friend of mine passed away suddenly and although I hadn’t seen him for a while, it really affected me. I didn’t think it was right to put out such an upbeat mix when such an awful thing had happened so I went back to the mix and just did another one and this is how it turned out.”

Inspired by classic compilations such as Sasha’s GU:Ibiza masterpiece, James Holden’s effort for Balance and that seminal effort that forged thousands of passions, Ministry Of Sound’s The Annual 2, jozif has turned in a mix that blends the classic and the contemporary in exquisite fashion. He wears his emotive heart on his sleeve from the very first second of this masterful mix, the sorrowful strains of Charles Webster’s Butterfly immediately piercing deep into the subconscious with its spine-tingling, bitcrushed melodies, lush ambient textures and heady vocals. From this Balearic slumber, he quickly adjusts the tempo to accommodate the slo-mo house chug of the late, great Martin Dawson’s sublime Glimpse collaboration Our Friends Electric, drenched in yearning pad chords and Depeche Mode undertones. Burnin’ Tears’ Got A Reason continues this blissed-out theme, harking back to the golden era of progressive house epitomised in Sasha & John Digweed’s seminal Northern Exposure mix.

Our selector draws us towards organic sounds on Lake Powell’s More Or Less, with softly muted piano motifs and rough organ chords woven deep below snappy beats to mesmerising effect, before some subtle space funk is drawn into the fold via Yoko0’s deep Blinded. The mix reaches one of its stunning peaks with the heartstring-tugging beauty of Steffi’s Sadness, neo-soul refracted through the early morning beams of light that fire through Panorama bar’s shutters. From the depths rise bolder hooks, the melodic bassline and hazy chords of Silicone Soul’s One Thing paving the way and teeing up the sweeping strings and soaring vocals of How I Feel as the energy begins to swell.

Just as the beats threaten to keep rolling, jozif reins the percussive elements in and brings the focus back to hooks and melodies through Ian Pooley’s pulsating, synth-laden moment of euphoria Compurhythm. The burgeoning riffs give way to the garagey vocal treatments and sumptuous depths of Sam Wallace’s shimmering Echelon as we move towards the mix’s conclusion. jozif flexes his production muscle with two slices of musical sophistication that grip, beguile, progress and evolve in a microcosmic reflection of the mix as an entirety: the low-slung bass and delicate melodics of BT’s 3, and the scintillating string arrangements of BT’s 5. Both tracks put his love of cinematics at the fore, rousing us towards an epic finale. The hypnotic warmth of Rob Shields’ Slum Room rounds off in demure style, 808 bass throbs punctuating dramatic vocal snippets and distant, heavily effected guitar strums creating a pensive, reflective mood to lay the mix down to rest.

“We are very excited to invite jozif to be part of the Balance family of selectors” says Balance’s Tom Pandzic, “and we believe he is the perfect choice to launch the new Balance presents compilation series, which will focus on the next generation of DJ/producers that are flying the flag for quality electronic music, and moving the scene forward.” With this carefully considered mix that’s built through a succinct selection of constantly engaging music, jozif has launched this exciting new series in fittingly inspiring fashion.

Nick Curly

Defected continue to spark the interest of the underground (and beyond) with the March release of a Bonus Edition of Nick Curly’s ‘Between The Lines’ LP that comes bundled with remixes from Dennis Ferrer, Mr Fingers, Yoruba Soul, Guti and more.

Original released on Curly’s own Cecille imprint in March 2012, ‘Between the Lines’ was the culmination of a long journey into house that saw the German DJ/Producer go from bright promise to fully fledged international elite in just a few years. Careful stewardship of his 8-Bit and Cecille imprints, impeccable DJ sets and must have productions made Curly the prime exponent of the ‘Mannheim Sound’ but with ‘Between The Lines’, we saw a producer that is so much more than a specific house movement.

Eschewing sterile, computerised aesthetics ‘Between The Lines’ uses live instrumentation, live vocals and real emotion to convey it’s message – that of a walk through Curly’s house and techno influences and passions.

It’s with Curly’s influences in mind that the Defected crew, who jumped at the chance to re-release ‘Between The Lines’ after admiring the project throughout 2012, began to compile remixes for this Bonus Edition release. Bone-fide legends Mr Fingers and Osunlade (Yoruba Soul) and contemporary maestros Glimpse, Guti, Uner, Kollektiv Turmstrasse and H2 all provide versions that weave into the fabric of the original material. Nick Curly’s ‘Between The Lines’ (Bonus Edition) is a natural extension from the already impressive original release and makes for a standout snapshot of not only Nick Curly’s best work, but of house music’s brightest and best.

Brodinsky Live in the Boiler Room

Miguel Bastida & Florian Kaltstrøm

You may recognise “Behind The Mirror” as being the excellent closing track on CD2 of John Digweed’s latest “Live In London” 4xCD mix compilation on Bedrock. Spain’s Miguel Bastida and Austria’s Florian Kaltstrøm have joined forces with Florian’s fellow countrymen Emil Berliner, Philip Straub and Christoph Abele (aka caTekk) to great a stunning 4-track EP to kick off 2013 in style.

“Behind The Mirror” is all about elegant rhythms, powerful percussion, deep, driving bass and brooding atmospheres, making it a standout track. Emil Berliner (who takes his artist name from the German-born American inventor who is best known for developing the disc record gramophone in the 1890’s) takes things into deeper tech-house territory with his delicious dub-influenced tech re-work.

“Glasso Phone” develops a more organic vibe with vocal snippets over a hypnotic, hissing, percussive backdrop. This is a theme that is expanded upon by Philipp Straub and CaTekk as they develop an absorbing rollercoaster bass heavy groove with their unforgettable remix.

The “De Barcelona a Viena EP” is the first of many exciting new releases coming on Bedrock in 2013. Watch out!

Renaissance Man

Turbo Recordings takes new-school electro to grad school with the latest release from Finnish duo Renaissance Man.

Finland's Renaissance Man have earned a reputation as some of the smartest minds in dance music, and by extension, the world. Following their brilliant 2011Turbo debut LP, the former architects continue to bring high-minded concepts to low-ended club tracks with their latest release, "Call2Call."

The six tracks on this EP take the DNA of classic electro and splice it with techno's focus on structure and the duo's trademark "Critical House" conceptual ingenuity. The use of landline phone samples over dirty 808 beats evokes something both timeless and incredibly time-specific, like a primitive ape-man (or woman) being handed the first-ever cordless phone and hearing his first dial tone as the equivalent of being left to die in space. The result is something familiar yet new, much like the second time you ever read the phrase "familiar yet new."

None of which is to say that this music doesn't have balls. Because it does. Brainy, well-considered balls. Accept them as our gift to you.

Dirtybird Player

"dirtybird Players" is a showcase of all the key artists and upcoming talent on the label. This sampler is an up front taste of the full length compilation and world tour coming this Spring. "Don't Like To Do That" was an unmarked demo that came through to me and every time I dropped it at least two DJs came over to ask me what it was. It took me 3 weeks to figure out who actually made the track and finally we hunted down the awesome duo called Cause & Affect from Birmingham and snagged this unusually funky groove. Worthy's "Dip" I've been playing for 6 months to great success. This is one of those bass heavy dirtybird jams you can bet will get the asses moving every time. Worthy has been appearing on db for almost 8 years now and has developed his sound quite dramatically via his own label Anabatic. Lastly, the young up and comer Justin Jay makes his 2nd official appearance with "Altitude" a track championed by Justin Martin this year. This is a deep moody affair and a great prelude into Justin Jay's full Static EP due out this April. And take note, hes only 19 years old! (A very wise 19 I have to say).

Pirupa

Few labels across the dance music spectrum reach the dizzying, eclectic heights quite like Riva Starr’s Snatch!. Regardless of whether the imprint is turning its hand to disco, techno or house, rest assured the end result will be one that’s thought-provoking, intriguing and perhaps most importantly, will make you dance.

Pirupa’s return to his compatriot's label then, is something of a no-brainer for all involved. Add this to the fact that another globally renowned Italian producer stamps his name on the record, and one gets the feeling that we’re in for something pretty special from Snatch! 035…

And Pirupa doesn’t let the side down either. Just like “Party Non Stop”, “Do It” is produced on a manic tip and with the party in mind, a trait of Pirupa that’s practically without peer and one that clearly endeared him to Snatch! in the first place.

The previously alluded to Leon then teams up with Pirupa for “Everylife”, a whirlwind seven-minute tech-house monster that’s characterised by its groove-laden charm and cannily chosen – and placed – samples. The most downtrodden of the bunch, “The Base” closes the EP out with the sort of menacing guile that Pirupa turns his hand to when he feels like testing his listener. In all, a diverse collection of tracks that only serve to emphasise the Italian’s standing in the game.

Freeform Five feat. Juldeh Camara

Early support by Tim Sweeney, Aeroplane, Âme and more..

In these fast-moving times, where many acts come and go in the space of a few blog posts, it's becoming harder and harder to find artists with true staying power. Anu Pillai aka Freeform Five is one of those rare artists.

Following an impressive series of original productions & remixes and a relentless touring schedule, Anu decided to take a break from Freeform Five a few years back to concentrate on writing, producing & remixing for the likes of Ladyhawke, Santigold, Lana Del Rey, Little Boots and Roisin Murphy amongst others.

Anu has always thought outside the box. His remix of Isolee's Beau Mot Plage redefined the art of remixing, juxtaposing the micro-synthesis of the original with intricate Afro & Latin polyrhythms, creating a bonafide house music classic. Now Anu has come full circle, collaborating with Gambian griot and master musician Juldeh Camara (a member of Robert Plant's Sensational Space Shifters band) for his latest release Weltareh on the legendary Eskimo recordings. As a multi instrumentalist, composer, DJ and producer, Anu can skillfully meld the organic musicianship of Juldeh's Fulanese riti (a one string violin) and kologo with his own studied electronic experimentation and guitar playing – as one listen to this truly epic track will attest.

Prins Thomas joins the the stellar list of super talented artists who've been invited to remix Freeform Five tracks (following on from Tiefschwarz, Radioslave, Lindstrom, Mylo, M.A.N.D.Y, Ewan Pearson, Jackson & His Computer Band and Maurice Fulton to name a few) along with a stunning re-work from Anu himself alongside Glasgow Underground's Kevin Mckay.

Hot Waves Sampler Vol. 4

Forth in the Hot Waves compilation series kick’s off the new year in style with this eight track vinyl double pack with some hot, hot licks! The Hot Creations offshoot has gone from strength to strength and this Hot Waves volume does little to disappoint.

The A side features Leed’s legend Buckley combing with Ives St. Ange on vocals to produce the most infectious slice of genre defying hip-house you’ll this year, ridiculously hooky you’ll be humming it until summer.. woot woot! Buckley shares the A side with house stalwarts Simon Baker and Rob James as they combine with England Brooks to deliver a slice of hot house pie best served straight up… no chaser!

On the flip and hot on the heels of the huge ‘Pain ‘n’ Love’ EP released on Hot Creations early in 2012, HNQO team up with Bip for the hotly anticipated ‘City Lights’. Already highly sought after and heavily championed this is another sure-fire hit from Henrique. Next up is house hero Lil Mark, previous recording for Classic and Disco 45, Mark delivers an ice cold a slice of killer house. ‘Fate & Destiny’ is a truly timeless piece of house that is simply devastating on the floor!

The C Side witnesses another house legend; Filthy Rich deliver the monstrous ‘Do It Again’. Rich has been releasing records since the mid 90’s and this is testament to his skills as a producer, proper chi-town business. Also featured on this side is Jamie Jones edit of Alexis Raphael’s ‘Rave’. Another huge record that will have you jacking like a maniac, proper rave!

Finally the forth side of this salubrious double pack features LA Based band Human Life teaming up with Anabel England who sang on Lee Foss’s recent Electricity track with MK. ‘Falling’ is an emotive electronic torch song with Anabel’s stupendous voice. Finally Tom Ruijg produces a dirty jacking, break beat colossus of a track, ‘S For Sticky’ is another absolute killer to round off this fantastic double pack.

Tube & Berger

Tube & Berger release their first EP on Suara after two magnifique remixes for Pleausekraft & Belocca and AFFKT in 2012. "Pleasure Dip" is also their first record after "Lovebreak", the tune who reached #1 Overall Beatport Top100 and after 4 months is still on the Deep House Top100. The German combo-star have worked for many months exclusively in this ep, trying to get the right inspiration. The got it. "In My Dip" and "Pleasure Of Pleasure" keep the line drawed from Tube & Berger on 2012: emotive beats for the dancefloor. Two well planned music melodic masterpieces which will get tons of plays in 2013.
